Q&A with the Bradford leadership team

  • Tell us about your plant and what you produce there?
The Bradford plant opened in 2005 and was operated by Cericola Farms as a family-owned business. Throughout the years, the Cericola family processed and provided fresh poultry to the Bradford community. In late 2018, Maple Leaf Foods acquired Cericola Farms and continued Cericola’s commitment to support the Bradford community with its fresh poultry aligned with Maple Leaf Foods’ vision to become the most sustainable protein company on Earth!

At Bradford, we process and package fresh poultry into delicious wings, boneless skinless breasts, thighs, and whole birds. We make seasoned poultry in a variety of flavours and cuts, which include organic, Raised Without Antibiotics (RWA), and Halal. We also temper and defrost turkey, pork, and plant-based proteins for further processing at other Maple Leaf Foods plants.

We have 210 Team Members working at our plant, including both frontline and salaried Team Members.
  • What’s an interesting fact about your site or operations that people wouldn’t know?
We have a unique group of Team Members who are pieceworkers. We are the only facility in the Maple Leaf Foods network that has pieceworkers, whose job is to de-bone our poultry products. These individuals are important because they work in an incredibly precise way that no machine can replicate!
  • Do you have a unique plant tradition or culture?
From Cericola Farms to Maple Leaf Foods, giving back to the local community has always been an important initiative for the Bradford plant. Several times per year, we donate surplus product to a local food rescue and host food drives for Bradford’s local food bank. Giving back is important to us, in addition to trying to improve food security in Canada.
  • What makes this a fun place to work and a good community to work in?
Bradford has a social committee that plans fun events all year round! From BBQs, food trucks, cultural celebrations, employee appreciation events, raffles, and holidays, team Bradford is always having fun and keeping our Team Members engaged!

We are also a tight-knit community with a strong sense of community spirit. We foster a welcoming and inclusive community, with a diverse team that celebrates and embraces its many cultures and backgrounds. Bradford is also a hub in Ontario’s agricultural industry.
  • Does your plant do events or team building? What does Diversity and Inclusivity look like at Bradford?
We have monthly events and celebrations planned by our social committee.

Bradford has an incredibly diverse workforce, and we celebrate many of our cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds through our plant-wide events. We always aim to be inclusive by translating our reading materials into all 12 languages represented at our plant. We also take initiative to spread awareness around internationally recognized months. In addition, Bradford has diverse cultural representation on all our committees: the social committee, the food safety committee, and the joint health and safety committee. Diversity and inclusion are key to our values!
  • What are the different departments that work here? What is your location and access like?
Our teams at Bradford include: tray packing, bulk packing, tempering/defrost, BBQ, distribution, quality assurance, sanitation, maintenance, human resources, planning, and production.

The Bradford plant is in close proximity to highway 400 and is a short distance to local amenities. We offer free parking and local bus transportation.
  • What kind of perks does your plant offer? How do you reward and value your employees?
Employee Sales, Safety Shoe Program, benefits (dental, medical, paramedical and vision), pension, Perkopolis discount program, and an Employee Assistance Plan.

We love to reward our Team Members with employee appreciation days, recognition cards, MLF swag (freezer jackets, toques, mugs etc.), employee events, gift cards, monthly employee recognition raffles, focus groups, and open suggestion boxes.
  • What is the process to receive your uniforms and PPE? Is this provided or paid for out of pocket?
All PPE is provided to our Team Members free of charge, including an annual safety shoe allowance.
  • What does professional growth and development look like at your plant?
There is a lot of opportunity for internal growth. We have had many internal promotions over the years and always allow our Team Members to apply to open roles before posting externally. We also offer training opportunities, professional development, and we always encourage volunteerism and giving back to the local community!
