We are a leading producer of plant-based protein foods including Tempeh, our signature “Smart Bacon” and “Smart Dogs”, ground beef and sausage substitutes, as well as various deli style meatless products.
Where we came from
LightLife started as a very small, locally owned business, in a converted car wash in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Back in 1979, when we first opened, our primary product was Tempeh. In the decades that followed, LightLife continued to grow, moving to our current location in Turners Falls. In 2017, Maple Leaf Foods acquired LightLife, becoming part of the Maple Leaf Foods team.

- Tell us about your plant and what you produce there?
The LightLife brand was founded in 1979. Our current plant moved to Turners Falls, Massachusetts in 1998. At Turners Falls, we produce Tempeh, our signature “Smart Bacon” and “Smart Dogs”, ground beef and sausage substitutes, as well as various deli style meatless products. We currently have between 120 to 150 Team Members. - What’s an interesting fact about your site or operations that people wouldn’t know?
Many people may not know that the LightLife brand was started in a converted car wash in 1979. - Do you have a unique plant tradition or culture?
We have a very diverse and inclusive staff, from multiple countries around the world. - Does your plant do events or team building?
We host holiday parties, summer barbeques, and monthly recognitions for Team Members. - What are the different teams/departments that work here?
At Turners Falls, we have Packing, Boxing, Sanitation, Maintenance, Tempeh, Pre-Weigh, Warehouse, Accounting, Supply Chain, Food Safety and Quality Assurance, Human Resources, and Health and Safety. - What is your location and access like?
Turners Falls is an idyllic New England town nestled against the Connecticut River in Western Massachusetts. It has easy access to the highway, yet has a rural small town feel to it. - What does Diversity and Inclusivity look like at Turners Falls?
We have a very diverse staff from multiple walks of life and nationalities from around the world. - What is the process to receive your uniforms and PPE? Is this provided or paid for out of pocket?
