It has been just over a month since Russia launched its brutal attack on Ukraine. The humanitarian impact is devastating. As the death toll continues to rise, and millions of Ukrainians flee their country, this military action has escalated into the largest conflict in Europe since the Second World War.
Like many companies, Maple Leaf Foods has felt compelled to act – to do what we can to lend a helping hand. Earlier this month, we donated $525,000 to support organizations directly involved in the massive humanitarian relief effort that is underway. We spread this donation across three organizations, with $175,000 being directed to the Canadian Red Cross, UNICEF Canada, and the Canada-Ukraine Foundation. These organizations are all providing critical front-line support to the hundreds of thousands of people that have been displaced. These funds will help to support the ongoing relief efforts in Ukraine and surrounding countries, including providing access to food, water and other essentials to those most impacted.
In addition, as governments around the world have imposed sanctions on Russia and its powerful elite, we heard the call for companies to play a role in eliminating economic ties with Russia in a further effort to exert pressure to stop this attack. We have carefully reviewed our commercial counterparties to ensure we are not transacting with Russian companies, this included reviewing our sourcing, sales and investments. We are also looking at opportunities to offer jobs and relocation support to Ukrainians who want to come to Canada and will continue to work with our government on these efforts.
We will continue to assess what more we can do as circumstances unfold. We hope that there is a path to peace and that this brutality can be brought to an end. Our hearts are heavy, and our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine and all those deeply impacted by these events.
